MMHI Services:

Drop-in Hours

To specifically address the stigmatization of seeking help for mental health needs in the Muslim community, MMHI brings counselors from Maristan. Through this collaboration, MMHI was able to provide free and unlimited consultations to students across the campus community. Students are able to book, reschedule, or cancel appointments via an online scheduling system.

MHI continues to offer unlimited 30 or 60 minute consultations on weekdays and Saturdays with three Maristan Counselors, Saha Jamshed, Hamed Fatahian, and Tephiny Jones. All MMHI consultation hours are fully remote currently. This year, MMHI has extended its consultation services to the summer in the form of phone consultations.

Ummah Talks

UmmahTalks are halaqa-style conversations about relevant topics that affect students. UmmahTalks help students come together to discuss, as fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, difficulties that other students can relate to. In the past, UmmahTalk topics have ranged from addressing self-care, understanding how to express our multiple identities, on navigating personal relationships, and many more!

Workshops

Intermittently throughout the school year, MMHI collaborates with off-campus organizations to deliver free workshops and trainings catered to Cal’s Muslim community. These workshops are designed to address topics that, due to cultural stigma and barriers, are not adequately discussed in traditional Islamic settings but are crucial to the health of our community. In the past MMHI has hosted trainings that explained how to support sexual assault survivors and how to develop safer spaces for informed sexual health decision making. We also host a pre-marital workshop annually that discusses healthy dynamics of a partnership and how to identify toxic behaviors. All workshops are hosted by highly trained professionals and are followed by a Q&A session. We welcome students from any and all faiths and cultural backgrounds to attend these events.

RealTalks

Many times in our community, we shy away from discussing the real challenges that many of us face on a day to day basis. The reality is, Muslims are humans and as students in a college environment, many of us may be doing things that others ‘look down upon’. The good news is, our religion has room for everyone - it doesn’t matter what you might be struggling with. In this series, we are going to keep it super real. Join us for frank discussions about smoking weed, drinking, partying, academic stress, Instagram addiction, and everything in between. This is an open, non judgmental space where all are welcome. Whether you yourself may be dabbling a bit here and there, have friends who are, or are curious to learn about how to approach the real issues college students face, come join us for this series. We’ll dive into the root causes of certain habits, discuss stories in our tradition of those who have changed their life no matter how hard it got, and discuss different ways to address our situation - with love of Allah and His Messenger and a path towards betterment.
